Mechanical code

Fuel gas

Pipe sizing and materials, venting categories, appliance connectors, shutoffs, pressure testing, and the IFGC rules that trip up people who came up on the electric side.

Refrigeration

Superheat and subcooling, charging by method, the pressure chart, diagnosis from readings, recovery, leak repair, and EPA 608 certification categories.

Kentucky law

Licensing classes, master versus journeyman scope, permits and inspections, and contractor obligations under KRS 198B.

Kentucky HVAC licensing is administered by the Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction β€” confirm license class requirements, exam format, and the adopted code editions with the Division of HVAC before you apply. EPA 608 certification is a separate federal requirement from your state license.

A taste

What a question looks like

A fixed-orifice system in cooling shows high superheat and low subcooling. What is the most likely cause?

  • Overcharge
  • Undercharge
  • Restricted metering device
  • Oversized evaporator

Why: High superheat says the evaporator is starved; low subcooling says there is not enough liquid stacking in the condenser. Both pointing the same direction is the classic undercharge signature β€” a restriction would starve the evaporator while subcooling rose. Diagnosis questions are drilled as pairs like this so you learn the pattern, not the answer.

Does this cover EPA 608?

The refrigerant-handling material is in the bank, including the certification categories and the recovery and leak rules. It is good preparation, but EPA 608 is its own federally administered test β€” take it through an approved certifying organization.

Journeyman or master?

Both. Master-level material β€” scope, supervision, and the business and law side under KRS 198B β€” is included and can be drilled as its own category.
